We had noticed during our visit that Venetians leave their trash outside their doors in little plastic bags (grocery bags, etc.). Today we saw where it went. We had to jump out of the way of a guy pushing a large metal card filled with trash bags. He pushed them out to the edge of the canal, where they were loaded by crane into a garbage boat.
After checking out, we hiked to the train station, and picked up some sandwiches along the way to eat later. The train trip was uneventful--no missed trains or lost luggage.
Upon arriving in Florence, we bought our train tickets to Rome from one of the self-service machines. We hiked to our hotel, Residenza Il Villino (a bit further than we had expected), and checked in. We have a lovely suite on the first floor, complete with a fridge to store cold drinks.

First tourist stop of the day was the Duomo. It's an interesting church: very ornate on the outside, but rather plain inside.
We also looked at (but didn't go inside) the Campanile:
and the Baptistry:
For our usual afternoon gelato stop, we found a gelateria just off the main tourist drag, on the street opposite Orsam Michele. John and Matt had chocolate, Beth strawberry mousse, and I had mango. Best gelato we've had so far!
The second stop was the Galileo Science Museum, which Beth picked out of the guidebook. It was a very interesting museum, full of things like old scientific instruments, maps, and wax anatomical models.
The highlight, though, was Galileo's finger:
After our usual late-afternoon showers, Sergio at the Residenza Il Villino recommended a nearby restaurant called Semolina. John ordered another calzone:
Beth ordered a pizza margherita:
Matt the spagettoni with prawns and spicy sauce (but they were out of prawns so he got lobster):
and I had the papardelle with wild game ragout:
Both the pastas were fantastic, and the pizzas were good.
Galileo's finger...wha?
